The Best Books to Turn into Book Safes (and Why)
Not all books are created equal, especially when you’re turning them into sneaky little hideaways.
At Vox & Dolly, I don’t just cut up any old book.
Each book safe is chosen with love, a sharp eye for detail, and a sprinkle of nostalgia.
Here’s what makes a book book-safe worthy and a peek into the titles that steal my heart (and your valuables).
Vintage Children’s Books: Where Magic Begins
There’s something timeless about a weathered copy of Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz. The illustrations, the whimsy, the memories. These kinds of books are more than just pretty, they’re filled with charm and history.
They make beautiful book safes because they’re thick enough to carve into, often have lovely, illustrated covers, and spark instant nostalgia.
Whether you’ve read them as a kid or you’re gifting one to someone who did, they hit the sweet spot between functional and sentimental.
Reader’s Digest Books: Classic on the Outside, Fun on the Inside
There’s a reason Reader’s Digest book safes are a Vox & Dolly staple.
They’re solid, stylish, and wonderfully nondescript.
On the shelf, they look like any other classic book, neutral enough to blend in, yet inside, they’re anything but ordinary.
Because the covers are often plain, I get to play with what’s inside, adding colourful lining pages, vintage paper, or unexpected pops of design. They're the perfect “nothing to see here” disguise.
Books with Niche Topics: The Perfect Match for Someone’s Passion
Want to hide your keepsakes in a book about yachting, needlework, or rare dog breeds?
I’m into it.
One of my recent faves was a vintage book all about Dobermans, perfect for a dog lover.
Books like these work beautifully because they tap into someone’s hobby or personality. They’re often the kind of thing you’d proudly display on a coffee table... without anyone guessing what’s hidden inside.
Beautiful Covers: Designed to Be Seen
Some books just stand out on their own.
Embossed vintage hardcovers, floral spines, gilded lettering, these books practically ask to be picked up and admired.
These are the ones you don’t need to tuck away. Put them front and centre on your shelf or bedside table. They're functional but also serve as a beautiful piece of upcycled decor.
Unassuming Books: The Ultimate Hideaway
Not every book safe has to shout for attention.
In fact, some of the best ones are the quiet types. Plain cover, everyday title, the kind of thing you’d never expect to hold a secret stash.
I love taking these unassuming books and transforming them with new lining pages and a hidden compartment that’s both fun and functional. On the outside, it’s all “Grandpa’s Gardening Tips,” but inside?
Who knows.
My Process: It’s a Little Bit of Magic
Each Vox & Dolly book safe is handmade in my Inner West Sydney studio in Australia.
I use a mix of pre-loved, vintage, and even new books that would otherwise be discarded. Every book is carefully carved (which is trickier than it sounds!), then lined and finished by hand to make sure it’s sturdy and stylish.
Because books are finicky and fragile, I don’t offer custom titles, but my collection is always changing. You never know what gem you’ll find next.
Why It Matters
Choosing the right book isn’t just about looks, it’s about storytelling.
My book safes aren’t just hiding places; they’re keepsakes, conversation starters, and sustainable decor.
Each one has a story, and now it gets to be part of yours.
